First settled in 1668,
Long Branch grew to be a distinctive resort community. From the 1860s to the 1920s, it was one of the most glamorous vacation destinations in the country, attracting many prominent visitors, including seven American presidents.
Long Branch is
Monmouth
County' s largest city. Many examples of the city's resort past remain, including some of the county’s finest examples of Victorian architecture. Today,
Long Branch is experiencing a rebirth and retains a strong tourism industry. Widespread commercial development, as well as an initiative to transform the city into a year-round community, are underway.
One such initiative is Pier Village. Located on the oceanfront boardwalk, Pier Village features numerous fine restaurants and great shopping. There is also a bustling condo/townhome community there, as well as Ocean Place, an oceanfront resort.
In fact, Long Branch's history as a resort town dates back to the late 1700s. In the 1800s, it was widely considered a "
Hollywood " of the east. Some of the greatest theatrical and other performers of the day gathered and performed. It was visited by presidents Chester A. Arthur, James Garfield, Ulysses S. Grant, Benjamin Harrison, Rutherford Hayes, William McKinley, and Woodrow Wilson. Seven
Presidents
Park, a park near the beach, is named in honor of their visits. The Church of the Presidents (
New Jersey ), where all seven worshipped, is the only structure left in
Long Branch associated with them.
There are several distinct neighborhoods and areas in the City of
Long Branch , each with its own character, strengths and challenges. Among these are North End (once known as "Atlanticville"), Branchport, Beachfront North and South (including Pier Village), Downtown, Uptown, West End and Elberon. As the city's now famous redevelopment initiatives continue to grow in scope and renown, the lower Broadway area (a portion of the city's Downtown) will become an Arts District.
